Customer Rating: Summary: The best series ever on TV Comment: I saw the series when it was originally screened on TV. The accounts by people who were there at the time make it worth far,far more than anything which present day historians can contribute. A wonderful and humbling experience.
Customer Rating: Summary: The most comprehensive study of WWI available on video Comment: The World at War, produced in the 1970's was considered a mile stone in TV documentaries. However, few know that its forerunner was The Great War, made during the early 1960's. What makes this so comprehensive is the fact that it is researched and written by experts, John Terraine being the most famous. The series is litered with original footage, most of which has not been available before now. This box set, apart from being extremely good value, provides the best, overall, history of the first world war. It is equally as important as the World at War, some would say, including me, that it is better. This is a MUST for everybody interested in WWI
Customer Rating: Summary: The best documentary series ever made on the Great War! Comment: This 26 part documentary on the First World War was made in 1964 by BBC 2 in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australian Broadcasting Commission. The series is quite simply the best ever made on the Great War, not only because of the painstaking research and production but also because of interviews with the men and women who lived it, many of them only in their 60s. The episodes were writern by John Terraine, Correlli Barnett and Alistare Horne and all three know their subject. If you are familiar with the series, on the Second World War, "The World at War" it will become clear that "The Great War" was very big influence on that documentary. If you have an interest in the First World War then "The Great War" series is a must have. You will not see better!
