Customer Rating: Summary: American bias, but excellent overview and detail of the process Comment: A very well-laid-out book which tracks the whole process from script to distribution and beyond. It is written by three US-based lawyers and so is 100% accurate only for LA-based deals, but is of general application to all indie films.
Certain contractual issues do not apply, say, to UK, deals: eg SAG vs Equity contracts for actors, and the issue of pay-or-play, which is a very American tactic and would be unusual in the context of your average UK indie film.
Some very good fundraising tips are countered well with the realism that getting money to make a film is a multi-faceted process which should not be undertaken lightly. The three lawyers do plug the necessity of using an entertainment lawyer perhaps once too often, but I think this book would sit well on the shelf of any aspiring movie producer, especially someone interested in dealing with the procedural mess of filming in the US.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bravo! Comment: The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide is the most practical and concrete text on the Hollywood deal-making process that I have read to date. Its succinct presentation of the independent film business-legal process is welcome. Many of the real-world examples of independent producers struggling to secure the deal are thought provoking and encouraging. I believe that any independent film producer who reads and applies the information contained in the Survival Guide can only win. Film schools should seriously consider adding this publication to their list of reference texts.
