Customer Rating: Summary: Essential reading to get a grip on modern Shi'ism Comment: This excellent book is finally coming out in paperback. It is a scholarly study of Mohamad Baqir Sadr but essential reading for anyone who wants to get a grip on current debates within Shia Islam in Iraq, Iran and elsewhere. Mallat has had a colourful career in sponsoring war-crime campaigns against Saddam Hussein and Ariel Sharon. This books reminds us of the deep commitment and understanding that underpin his practical work. He makes a very convincing that Sadr was the most original thinker of modern Islam.
