Summary: Really useful
Comment: As far as a recommended reading text, it is really clear and includes all the relevant explanations and case references for an introduction into criminal law. I would advise buying jones&christies caselaw book to support the reading for this one

Summary: Concise, yet thorough!
Comment: Though I only read 300 out of its 400 pages, I found Jones & Christie's work to be a concise and thorough explication of the principles of Scots Law. Guiding the reader through the nature and sources of Scots Law, actus reus, mens rea, automatism, causation, attempts, complicity, conspiracy and defences, the book then turns to the actual crimes and offences under Law.

I like the way then turns to these offences under the standard groupings of Crimes against the Person, Crimes of Dishonesty, those against Property, those relating to Public Order and Morality, and then certain Statutory Offences. The mens rea and relevant points of each are discussed in turn, together with any aggravations or complications.

An excellent resource, particularly if you can't afford Gordon's Criminal Law of Scotland --who can?

Summary: Absolutely essential guide to Scots Criminal Law
Comment: I am a serving police officer in Scotland and have found this book to be an authoritative text on the kind of issues I deal with often whilst working.

The stated cases are lucidly described and difficult concepts like causation and attempts are put in a relatively straightforward manner that even the novice can appreciate and understand.

The only fault with a volume like this is that, as more stated cases redefine and refine various offences, the need for further editions appear. I already feel like I am falling behind.

However, every books on Scots criminal law is the same in this respect.

If you want in-depth explanations on the more common crimes and an interesting history on the development of Scots law this is the book to go for. It makes a fascintaing read, even for the layman.

Reccommended

Summary: The one and only criminal textbook
Comment: I cannot believe there are no reviews for this. It is the prescribed textbook for criminal law, certainly in Glasgow, and is much better than your usual accompanying text.

The format is wonderful - easy-to-manage sections throughout - and the laungage not too pretentious, as many law books are. It is a difficult thing to get students really interested, but many a time have I found this a great bedtime read.

If you study law or have any problems criminal-law-wise, you cannot afford to miss this.
