Customer Rating: Summary: Intelligently written and superbly researched. Comment: At first sight the shere size of the book may appear daunting, but the reader who delves into it is rewarded by what is a treasure chest of stories, details and information about the history of the Royal Marines. Julian Thompson is clearly passionate about his subject matter, as one might expect from a retired Major General in the Corps, and his written style is equal to the task of recording 350 years of military history in one volume. Due to it's size and level of detail this is probably not one for the general reader, but anyone with a special interest in the Royal Marines should be especially interested in this excellent book.
Customer Rating: Summary: A full detailed account making for slightly heavy reading Comment: Unless the reader has a specific reason to read this book, joining the RM or an old bootie, then this is not a book to pick up for a bit of gentle reading. However, read this book through and the reader will know not only everything the RM have done, but also get a true feel for the history and ethos behind them.
Customer Rating: Summary: Once you get into it you can't put it down Comment: This book gives an excellent insight as to how the Royal Marines started from the very beginning until present day. It has some good personal accounts by soldiers fighting at that time. The descriptions of how the soldiers fought are good helping to visualise what is going on at that time. It also makes you appreciate just what these people went through, cold, exhaustion, hunger and personal loss.
Customer Rating: Summary: A complete narrative history of the Royal marines Comment: The narrative of the history of how the Royal Marines came to be what they are today is descriptive and told in a interesting fashion. But do not make the same mistake as I in thinking this book would be easy to read it is not and you have to have a firm interest to read it all the way through. If you are interested in the history of the Royal Marines, this book is for you.
